Meet AAPL member Bill Fairman! Bill is a co-founder of Carolina Hard Money and has been an AAPL member for five years. When he’s not building his business and helping investors create passive wealth, you’ll find him devoted to every facet of personal improvement and sharing valuable advice and tips with like-minded people.
What AAPL benefit do you MOST value?
The Annual conference by far has been the most value for us.
Why did you join AAPL?
To become better at what we do, meet other like-minded people and share best practices.
What is your favorite AAPL memory?
The first conference we attended. That’s where we met the company that was going to help us get to the next level. A vendor sponsor that specialized in helping others get the capital we need to run our business.
Why did you decide to enter the private lending profession?
My business partner, also my sister, and I are veterans of the mortgage industry, we had become a casualty of the 2008 mortgage meltdown. We left the industry for a while. I like to say that I was unemployable. I don’t exactly fit the corporate banker profile, Wendy had beenbrokering deals between rehabbers and folks with self-directed IRAs on the side while in seminary school. It became clear that there was a need for acquisition and construction capital that the banks were unwilling to fill. When Wendy finished school, she went to work full time in the real estate investing world and she asked me to start Carolina Hard Money with her.
What are some accomplishments you are particularly proud of?
There are many, but I’ll keep it to two. We took a two-person shop to 11, all paying as we go (no debt!) We have helped hundreds of investors create passive wealth, while at the same time helped active investors (rehabbers and custom homebuilders) do the same thing. Lastly, we are a part of helping neighborhoods become safe, vibrant communities once again.
What is one of your favorite quotes?
My favorite is from my friend Dr. David Phelps; “your net worth is your network.” It may not be his original, but he is the one that shared it with me and it’s so true.
What is your favorite book, and why?
Marilee Adams wrote “Change Your Questions, Change Your Life.” This book helps your leadership skills with creating collaborative accountability through the questions you ask of others. Example: Why didn’t you hit your sales numbers this month? What is it that we can do, or you need to hit your numbers?
In first question your automatic reaction is defensive. In the second, you’re more likely to get a collaborative accountable solution.
