Our May Member Spotlight shines on Ben Fertig, President of Constructive Capital!
Ben Fertig has been successful in the financial world for over 15 years and has ran Credit and Asset Management, managed originations, credit policy, capital markets, and has been a longtime friend and member of AAPL. When he’s not working hard in the office, you’ll probably find him working out in the gym or on the links perfecting his golf swing. While he can answer any question you may have about loans, what you may not know is that he is also your go-to guy if you need Cabernet recommendation!

How long have you been an AAPL member?
Over 10 years
What AAPL benefit do you MOST value?
All of the benefits have been a value add to Constructive. If I had to single one out, the Annual Conference is an awesome event. It gives us the opportunity to spend time with many of our clients and potential clients as well.
Why did you become a member?
I became a member because the AAPL organization provides a combination of networking and business development opportunities. The association also has overwhelming professionalism permeating the organization.
What is your favorite AAPL memory?
I have to admit….there have been some beyond impressive receptions at the Annual Conference…
We have hosted and attended. My advice is to make sure you don’t miss any of them.
Why did you decide to enter the private lending profession?
I have been a Mortgage Banker since 1996 – when I quickly realized I was too small and not talented enough to play professional hockey after college.
All but the first 9 months have been in management; the last 11 years (since 2012) have been in the Private Lending market which has been the most enjoyable and rewarding.
What are some accomplishments you are particularly proud of?
There are many accomplishments I am proud of, but one that stands out is how early Constructive diversified our capital sources in 2021, especially for our DSCR Loan products. In early 2022 when sharply rising rates caused our competitors to re-price loans during the process, we were able to add value to our clients by honoring all of our loan locks. To date, our clients continue to recognize us for this ability.
What is your favorite book, and why?
Jack, Straight From the Gut by Jack Welch. I read it a few times each year. The late Jack Welch was the Chairman and CEO of GE from the 1981-2001. As a young manager and leader in the 90’s, I (and many others) looked to Jack as the standard and his philosophy is still embedded in my professional belief systems. More recently, I respect and admire Jamie Dimon of JP Morgan. Hopefully, he writes a book soon because I am getting old.
