Our June Member Spotlight shines on Carmen Fields Carter, our Strategic Partnerships Manager at AAPL!

What have you found to be most beneficial from AAPL membership?

AAPL is truly an association for its member base. One of the most valuable benefit’s of the AAPL membership has been the opportunity to engage with a diverse network of industry professionals who are committed to advancing the profession. The combination of educational resources, advocacy efforts, and peer collaboration has enhanced my knowledge, expanded my professional relationships, and helped me stay connected to the evolving needs of the industry. Together we can and will continue to create positive change in the private lending space.

What, if anything, would you/your company like to contribute to fellow AAPL members and the private lending industry?

Relationships in any industry are key to its success. The old saying ‘it’s more about who you know than what you know’ also applies to the private lending space. I truly enjoy connecting thought leaders in our space. Playing a role in forging relationships between lenders, investors, service providers, and like-minded individuals is truly rewarding.

What is your favorite AAPL memory?

I have way too many memories over the past years to just pick one, but one of my favorite memories is greeting all our members and attendees with ‘Santa Claus’ at the annual conference.

Advice you’d give your younger self?

Don’t overthink the risks when taking chances on a new opportunity. You will talk yourself out of it every time and that is just fear of failure.

Career advice for industry newbies?

Network, network, network, and do not be afraid to ask questions if you are unsure. There are so many people who truly want to help and will save you time, money and headaches down the road.

Accomplishment you’re particularly proud of?

My husband and I are actively involved in working with children with special needs. This is a passion of ours and I am extremely proud of the work we do to raise awareness and create opportunities and inclusivity for these families.

Your personal motto/words you live by?

Control the controllable’s is my motto.

Favorite “down time” activity?

In my down time you can find me on the beach. There is no place I had rather be to clear my mind than soaking up the sun and salt air. A close second is cheering on my favorite sports teams. I am an avid college football/basketball and NFL fan. Go PATS!

Favorite book/movie/other content, and why?

I love any book by Malcolm Gladwell. ‘Outliers’ is a favorite of mine and a must read.

Your fur baby’s name?

Deuce is my American Bulldog. He is the sweetest, most ‘slobberiest’ pup and an absolute mama’s boy!
